Prometrium is used for protecting the lining of the uterus in certain women who are also taking estrogen.
Generic prometrium akorn amensin B, a potential anticancer agent, also reduces the formation of DNA-damaging aggregates in human breast cancer cells, according to research published in the journal Biomaterials.
The researchers note that use of an anticancer agent, such as pterostilbene, should not only reduce tumor growth, but it also may reduce the production of cancer-causing DNA.
However, more research is needed to establish if pterostilbene, a natural component of the bark Brazilian myrtle tree, is an effective cancer drug.
Researchers also say more investigation is needed to identify the molecular pathways that could be targeted by pterostilbene, as well to determine whether there are any other compounds that might inhibit the DNA damage in breast cancer cells.
They also state that additional research is needed to establish if pterostilbene could be combined with other cancer drugs to effectively combat breast cancer.
The researchers hope their research opens the way for more research to be done on pterostilbene.
"One challenge is, how to study a naturally occurring compound that is a natural component of the myrtle leaf when we do not have adequate synthetic compounds to mimic its activity. The answer lies in fact that pterostilbene, a natural constituent of the Brazilian myrtle, is in very poor supply pharmaceutical industry. We have shown that can mimic the effect of pterostilbene, but also that this compound is a powerful DNA inhibitor," said Dr. David A. Williams, Professor of Pharmaceutical Biochemistry at Case Western Reserve and a senior author of the paper. "We are hopeful that future work will elucidate the mechanisms through which pterostilbene inhibits human breast cancer cells in vitro, whether there may be any other cancer chemotherapeutic agents that interact with pterostilbene, and whether this compound could be combined with other chemotherapeutic agents to have greater value in cancer treatment."
